EMDR 2009 Workshop - Information and Booking Form

October 16th 2009 | Leeds

Welcome to the second EMDR Autumn Workshop day being held in Leeds. But first I would like to thank you for making last year's event the great success it was, we listened to all your comments and hope that this year's event is even better!

We are proud to present a full day of workshops; registration starts from 9am with the first workshop starting at 10am, we then have a total of 10 workshops on the day, and we finish the day at 4pm. This year's theme is "Getting to Grips with EMDR Protocols".

The structure for the day is below. We have tried to collect a wide range of workshops to help you, the EMDR therapist, refine, update and hone your skills, to extend your practice and provide a greater depth to both the art and science of EMDR, all for only 100. In addition the day is an excellent networking opportunity and we have Blue Stallion Publications providing a book stand so that you can stock up on EMDR books and equipment.

We are incredibly excited by the potential of the day; spaces are limited to only 150 delegates so booking early is highly recommended. Remember that we were sold out last year! The workshops are booked on a first come, first booked arrangement, we will try to ensure that your first choice is met, but if the workshop is oversubscribed you will be allocated to your second choice.

If you have any questions please contact Matthew Cole on 07717 854355 or email workshop@emdryorkshire.org

Keynote Workshop - The EMDR basic protocol: a review and update

- Richard Mitchell, EMDR Trainer

The eight-phase protocol is the bedrock of EMDR, however, the way it is taught has evolved over the years. We will review how EMDR is currently taught and highlight some of the common mistakes and misunderstandings made by clinicians. Attendance at the workshop will therefore make certain that all delegates can proceed to the other workshops during the day, 'armed' with the latest information.

Workshop 1 - Troubleshooting

- Kay Toon, EMDR Consultant

This workshop is aimed at all EMDR clinicians who sometimes struggle with the standard protocol. It highlights some of the common difficulties encountered when using EMDR, and offers practical solutions based on the theoretical background. We will consider responses to questions frequently asked in supervision including: Why is processing so slow with this client? Why has it stopped? How do we speed it up again? Why does processing result in my client being overwhelmed? How can we slow it down again? What if the client doesn't have a negative thought?

Workshop 2 - Phobia Protocol

- Manda Holmshaw, EMDR Consultant & Trainer

Many phobias and current anxieties have their roots in past events, often unremembered. The EMDR phobia protocol follows Shapiro's three-layered approach. This workshop illustrates the use of the touchstone memory, the future template and the float-forward technique in processing phobias and current anxieties.

Workshop 3 - Recent Traumatic Event (RTE) Protocol

- Sandy Browning, EMDR Consultant

Advanced workshop for practitioners who work with people in the immediate aftermath (2-3 days afterward) of trauma. A knowledge of stabilizing and grounding people in shock essential. Recent traumatic events can be more fragmented and not yet integrated into existing schemas so that they may not readily be represented or generalized by any single scene from the event. With care, EMDR can be a useful tool at this stage to help reduce somatic and other symptoms whilst supporting the 'normal' response to trauma. Current research examined and use of protocol explored along with IES-R scale.

Workshop 4 - Closing Incomplete Sessions

- Annette Morris, EMDR Consultant

This workshop explores ways of managing sessions when there isn't time to complete the eight stage protocol, and considers the factors that make closure rather than resolution the appropriate response, timing, skills and techniques to bring down high levels of affect and contain unresolved material. This presentation includes discussion and experiential practice.

Workshop 5 - EMDR and Bereavement

- Fokkinna McDonnell, EMDR Consultant

The use of EMDR to facilitate the healthy and complicated mourning process; how EMDR can be combined with traditional approaches, such as creative work.

Workshop 6 - Blind to Therapist Protocol

- David Blore, EMDR Consultant & Trainer

The Blind to Therapist (B2T) Protocol (Blore & Holmshaw 2006, 2009), is aimed at helping provide EMDR in special circumstances particularly where the client is unwilling to describe a target image either because the client fears that the therapist will be disgusted or overwhelmed by the content - as in sexual abuse trauma, and/or where the client is reluctant to relinquish further perceived control for the purposes of conducting EMDR. In essence, the B2T protocol abandons the idea of 'client avoidance' and modifies EMDR so as to accommodate avoidance until the client is ready to identify traumatic material.

Workshop 7 - Interweaves

- Derek Farrell, EMDR Consultant & Trainer

This workshop will review the significance of using cognitive interweaves within EMDR and underline why they are an essential part of the EMDR clinician's psychotherapeutic repertoire. However In complex trauma cases often process cognitive interweaves are insufficient and therefore more elaborate ones are needed in the form of content interweaves and relational interweaves. Consequently this workshop will revisit the utilisation and elaboration of using cognitive interweaves in EMDR.

Workshop 8 - Pain Protocol

- Helen Macdonald, EMDR Practitioner

The Pain Protocol workshop will focus on the practical application of the Pain Protocol (based on Grant and Threlfo 2002); in the context of evidence available regarding its effectiveness. The emphasis of the workshop will be on clinical work using the protocol, and sharing experiences in practice. It is aimed at participants who have completed EMDR training, but who may have not had extensive experience working with this client group using EMDR.

Workshop 9 - The Selection and Application of EMDR Protocols for Children and Adolescents

- Fiona Lucus, EMDR Practitioner

Fiona will illustrate the importance of working within a developmental framework whilst working with children and adolescents. In particular she will illustrate which of the EMDR Protocols she has found most helpful with this client group. Drawing on case examples she points to how particular protocols might be adjusted to accommodate the needs of younger people.
